Department of Botany
The Department of Botany was established in 1968 to teach Biology to Pre-Degree Course students. In 1982, it began offering Botany as a subsidiary subject for B.Sc. Zoology students. On January 1, 1999, the Department introduced a comprehensive undergraduate program in Botany (Model II) with Biotechnology as the vocational subject and Biochemistry as the complementary subject. In addition to core and complementary Botany courses, the Department offers Agri-based Microenterprises as the open course and Agribusiness as the choice-based course. Students has to do ‘On the Job Training (OJT)/Hands-On Training (HOT)’ in nearby industries as part of their curriculum. The Department regularly organizes study tours for final-year students and field trips for first- and second-year students. It has a Botany Lab, a Biotechnology Lab, and a Tissue Culture Lab. The Department also maintains a herbal garden which contain various medicinal plants and herbs, including the ‘Nakshathravanam (Star forest)’. Partially funded by the DBT-Star College Scheme, the Department boasts a well-equipped lab established under this scheme. In the new MGU UGP four-year undergraduate program, the Botany Department offers a major, a minor, and an MDC (multidisciplinary course) for first and second-semester students.
